Business ownership
Business ownership controls who has final authority over a business in Rebased. The owner can transfer ownership, manage billing for self-billed businesses, delete the business account, and cannot be removed by another admin.
Ownership transfer is useful when:
- a client created the business and wants their accountant or advisor to take over ownership
- an accountant created the business during onboarding and now needs to hand ownership to the client
- a business owner is leaving and another admin needs to become owner
Where to find it
Go to Settings → Business → Ownership.
Only the current business owner can start or cancel an ownership transfer, or delete the business account. If you are not the owner, you will only see an incoming transfer if someone has selected you as the recipient.
Transfer business ownership
Before you start
The recipient must already be an active admin or advisor on the same business.
If the person is not listed:
- Go to Team → Team Members.
- Invite them to the business.
- Give them admin access if they need to become owner.
- Return to Settings → Business → Ownership.
Owner flow
To start a transfer:
- Go to Settings → Business → Ownership.
- Choose the admin or advisor who should become owner.
- Click Initiate Transfer.
Ownership does not change immediately. The recipient must accept the transfer first.
While the transfer is pending, the current owner can return to the same page and cancel it.
The recipient receives an email and an in-app notification when you initiate the transfer.
Recipient flow
If someone transfers ownership to you:
- Sign in to Rebased.
- Open the same business.
- Go to Settings → Business → Ownership.
- Review the incoming transfer.
- Click Accept Transfer or Decline.
If billing setup is required, Rebased will send you to Stripe to add your payment method. The ownership change completes after billing setup is successful.
You will receive an email and an in-app notification when someone requests ownership transfer to you. The current owner is notified if you decline, or if you accept and billing setup is still required.
Billing rules
Billing depends on how the business is currently paid for.
| Current billing | What happens |
|---|---|
| Free, self-billed | The recipient accepts and ownership changes immediately. |
| Pro, self-billed | The recipient accepts, sets up their own payment method, and then ownership changes. |
| Firm-managed billing | If the same advisor practice remains responsible, the recipient accepts and practice billing continues. |
| Firm-managed → client owner | The client must set up self-billing before ownership changes. The business is removed from firm-managed subscription billing. |
| Self-billed → advisor owner | The advisor can accept as self-billed, or use practice billing if they own a Rebased Firm billing account. |
AI credits and usage top-ups are not transferred between owners. Usage billing stays tied to the individual user who buys the credits.
What changes after transfer
After the transfer completes:
- the recipient becomes the business owner
- the previous owner remains a member with their existing permissions
- only the new owner can transfer ownership again
- self-billed subscription billing uses the new owner’s billing setup
Stripe Connect accounts for accepting invoice payments stay attached to the business and are not transferred as part of subscription ownership.
Both the previous owner and the new owner receive email and in-app confirmation when the transfer completes.
Delete a business account
Deleting a business account removes access to the business while keeping your Rebased login active. This is useful when you created a test business, no longer need a business workspace, or want to remove a business from your switcher without deleting your personal account.
Only the current business owner can delete a business account.
Before you delete
Check these points first:
- Make sure you are viewing the correct business in the business switcher.
- Cancel or downgrade any active paid subscription before deleting.
- Download or export any records you need outside Rebased.
- If another person should continue using the business, transfer ownership instead of deleting it.
How to delete a business account
- Go to Settings → Business → Ownership.
- Scroll to Delete Business Account.
- Click Delete Business Account.
- Type the confirmation phrase shown in the dialog, for example
DELETE Example Pty Ltd. - Click Delete Business.
After deletion, Rebased refreshes your active businesses. If you still have another active business, Rebased switches you to an available business. If you have no active businesses, Rebased takes you to the No Active Businesses page, where you can create a new business or sign out.
What deletion changes
After a business account is deleted:
- your Rebased login still works
- your personal profile, MFA, and passkeys are not deleted
- the business disappears from active business switching for all members
- pending invitations for that business are removed
- active ownership transfers for that business are cancelled
What deletion does not delete
For accounting and compliance reasons, Rebased retains historical business records. Deleting a business account does not hard-delete historical invoices, bills, payroll records, accounting records, audit history, or the retained business profile row.
If you need personal data removed from Rebased rather than just removing access to a business, contact support.
Notifications
Rebased sends ownership transfer notifications by email and in the Dashboard notifications panel.
| Event | Who is notified |
|---|---|
| Transfer started | Proposed new owner |
| Transfer accepted, waiting for billing | Current owner |
| Transfer declined | Current owner |
| Transfer cancelled | Proposed new owner |
| Transfer completed | Previous owner and new owner |
Troubleshooting
I am the owner, but the page says only the owner can transfer
Refresh the page and make sure you are viewing the correct business in the business switcher. Ownership is per business, so you may be owner of one business but only an admin of another.
The recipient is not in the dropdown
The recipient must be an active admin or advisor on the business. Invite them first or update their permissions from Team → Team Members.
The transfer is waiting for billing
The recipient needs to complete Stripe billing setup from Settings → Business → Ownership. The current owner cannot complete billing setup on the recipient’s behalf.
I am the owner, but I cannot see the delete button
Refresh the page and make sure you are viewing the correct business in the business switcher. Deletion is owner-only and ownership is per business.
I deleted a business but still see the same name
You may have another business with the same or similar name. Check the business switcher carefully. Deletion removes access to the specific business account you confirmed, not every business with a matching name.
